Newark Liberty International Airport

Newark, United States

Where to start
AirTrain + NJ Transit

AirTrain Newark plus NJ Transit to Penn Station NYC is the right choice for most Manhattan-bound travelers — about 30 minutes total, far more affordable than rideshare or taxi, and often faster during commute hours. AirTrain alone doesn't go into NYC; you need to transfer to NJ Transit or Amtrak at the airport rail station. Uber/Lyft pickup is at the terminals, NOT at the airport rail station.

Pickup Guidance

Rideshare

Uber and Lyft pick up in designated zones at each terminal — follow current airport signage and the in-app pin. The Newark Airport Rail Station is NOT a ride-app pickup point; don't ride AirTrain there hoping to grab an Uber. Don't accept rides from anyone soliciting inside the terminal.

Taxi

Official taxi ranks are outside each terminal. Newark taxis use flat-rate zone fares to Manhattan and other NYC areas, posted at the rank; tolls are added.

Shuttle

GO Airlink NYC and hotel shuttles depart from the ground transportation area; the Newark Liberty Marriott is on-airport.

Transit

AirTrain Newark (free within the airport, separate fare to exit at the rail station) connects all terminals to the rail station. From there, NJ Transit reaches New York Penn Station in about 30 minutes total; Amtrak Northeast Corridor also serves Boston, Philadelphia, and DC. A NJ Transit ticket to/from Penn Station includes the AirTrain fare.

Private Transfer

Pre-booked private transfers and SIXT Ride meet you at arrivals with a name sign — fixed price, popular for families and to avoid touts.

Local Tips

  • AirTrain Newark alone doesn't reach NYC — you must transfer to NJ Transit or Amtrak at the airport rail station. A NJ Transit ticket to Penn Station includes the AirTrain fare, so you don't buy AirTrain separately.
  • Don't summon Uber/Lyft at the airport rail station — it's not a permitted pickup point. Rideshare pickup is at the terminals.
  • For Manhattan, NJ Transit is often faster than a taxi during peak hours because it bypasses Lincoln Tunnel traffic.
  • Newark taxis use flat-rate zones to NYC posted at the rank; tunnel and bridge tolls are added to taxi and rideshare fares.
  • Use only the official taxi rank or marked rideshare zones — unlicensed driver solicitation occurs at EWR, as at JFK.

Tarmyq local tip

Your NJ Transit ticket to NYC Penn Station automatically includes the AirTrain Newark fare — you don't need to buy a separate AirTrain ticket if you're heading into Manhattan.
